I had to share this win with the group! Just finished an 18-month audit of a 300-bed hospital here in Charleston and found $180,000 in overbilling from Dominion Energy. The major issue was incorrect demand billing - they were on Rate Schedule LGS (Large General Service) but should have been on Hospital Schedule H-TOU which has much lower demand charges during off-peak hours. Turns out the hospital's peak demand was occurring at 3 AM due to their imaging equipment, but they were being billed peak rates 24/7.
War Story: Found $180K Overbilling at Hospital in Charleston
Margaret, that's an amazing find! Hospital schedules are often overlooked because the qualification requirements can be buried in the tariff fine print. Did you have any trouble getting the hospital reclassified, or was Dominion cooperative once you pointed out the error?
Great work Margaret! I'm curious about the 18-month timeline - was that due to the complexity of the billing analysis or challenges getting data from the utility? I'm working on a similar hospital project in North Carolina and wondering what to expect for timeline. Also, did you find any other common hospital billing issues during your audit?
