Not sure if water utility audits are discussed here, but I have a client questioning their Missouri American Water bills. Monthly usage jumped from 15,000 gallons to 28,000 gallons with no apparent cause. Missouri American tested the meter and claims it's accurate, but the client insists there are no leaks. Anyone have experience with water meter disputes? The monthly overcharge is about $180 if the meter is reading high.
Water Meter Accuracy Issues - Missouri American
Water audits follow similar principles to electric and gas. I'd recommend an independent meter test - utilities sometimes use older testing equipment that isn't as precise. Also check for seasonal factors, irrigation systems, or changes in operations that might explain higher usage. $180 monthly adds up quickly, so worth investigating thoroughly.
We do discuss water and gas audits here - utility billing principles are similar across all commodities. Steve gives good advice above. Missouri American is generally cooperative with legitimate disputes. I'd also suggest checking the billing history for any rate changes or seasonal adjustments that might explain the increase. If the meter truly is reading high, you'll want documentation from an independent testing lab. Keep us posted on what you find!
