I know testimonials are important for marketing but I feel awkward asking clients for them. When is the right time to ask and how do you phrase it without sounding desperate?
Client testimonials — how to ask without being awkward
Ask when the client is happiest — usually right after they receive the refund check or see the first corrected bill. The phrasing I use: "I'm glad we could find those savings for you. Would you be willing to write a brief testimonial about your experience? Even two or three sentences would be helpful. I can send you a link to leave a Google review, or if you prefer, a LinkedIn recommendation works great too." About 70% say yes when you ask at the right moment.
Phil's timing is perfect — ask at the moment of maximum satisfaction. I'd add: make it as easy as possible. Send them the direct link to your Google review page. Or better yet, draft a sample testimonial and say "feel free to use this as a starting point or write your own." Many clients want to help but don't know what to say. Giving them a template removes the friction.
The template idea is smart. Going to draft a few sample testimonials and offer them as starting points. Thanks both.
