Been doing mostly commercial work with Georgia Power but getting more requests for residential audits. The dollar amounts are obviously much smaller - typical recovery might be $500-2000 instead of $50K+. Do you think E&O insurance is still necessary for residential work or is the risk low enough that general liability would cover any issues?
Do I need E&O for residential audits?
Derek, I'd still recommend E&O even for residential. The dollar amounts might be smaller but homeowners can be just as litigious as commercial clients, maybe more so since it's their personal money. Plus if you mess up someone's credit by filing an incorrect dispute with CPS Energy, that could lead to damages beyond just the utility bill amount.
Angela's right about homeowners being litigious. I do both commercial and residential here in Tennessee and carry the same E&O coverage for both. TVA residential rates are pretty straightforward but I still occasionally find errors. Better safe than sorry, especially since residential clients often don't understand the audit process as well as commercial facility managers do.
