Tom from Des Moines here. MidAmerican Energy announced they're not renewing several wind farm power purchase agreements when the federal PTCs expire in 2026. This affects about 800 MW of capacity in Iowa and could impact wholesale power prices across the region. Anyone else seeing utilities backing away from renewables as tax incentives phase out?
MidAmerican Wind Generation Tax Credits Expiring
Randy here from Memphis. TVA has been pretty quiet about their renewable commitments post-2026. The economics definitely change when PTCs drop from $28/MWh to zero. MidAmerican has been a leader in wind development so this is concerning. Tom, are they planning to replace that capacity with natural gas or just buying more power from MISO?
Warren from Boise. Idaho Power is in similar situation with several wind contracts expiring 2026-2027. They've indicated they'll likely extend some agreements at lower prices but not all. The challenge is that many of these wind farms aren't economical without the tax credits, especially older projects with higher O&M costs. Could see a lot of early retirements in the next few years.
