Question about professional documentation requirements. How long do you all keep client files and what exactly do you archive? Just finished a big audit for a CL&P customer and want to make sure I'm meeting professional standards for record retention. CUBA guidelines mention 7 years but wondering what the practical approach is.

Documentation standards - what do you keep and for how long?
I keep everything for 7 years minimum - all bills, calculations, correspondence with Georgia Power, even draft reports. Had a client question findings from 5 years ago and was glad I had all the backup. Electronic storage is cheap these days so I actually keep most stuff longer than required.
Same here Derek. PECO has requested documentation from old audits before and you need to be able to produce it quickly. I scan everything and keep both electronic and paper copies for the first 3 years, then just electronic after that. The professional liability insurance companies also like to see good documentation practices.
