Albert here from Huntsville. Got a weird situation where a client received marketing materials from a company called Southern Energy Advisors claiming they can reduce Alabama Power bills through competitive supply options. I was under the impression Alabama is still fully regulated. Has something changed with the Alabama PSC that I missed? The marketing materials look professional but I'm skeptical.
Alabama Power Territorial Issues with Competitive Suppliers?
Albert, Tennessee is still regulated too and we get similar scam marketing all the time. Alabama hasn't deregulated electricity - Alabama Power still has monopoly territory for generation and delivery. Any company claiming to offer competitive supply in Alabama Power territory is either confused or running a scam. I'd report this to the Alabama PSC consumer protection division.
Just wanted to follow up - I checked with a colleague who does work in Alabama and confirmed there's been no deregulation. Southern Energy Advisors is probably another third party billing scam. These companies are getting more sophisticated in their marketing but the underlying business model is still just adding fees to regulated utility bills.
