Just saw the news about KUB here in Knoxville - apparently they discovered systematic meter reading errors going back 18 months that affected over 12,000 customers. Some people were overcharged by thousands while others were severely undercharged. They're claiming it was a 'software glitch' in their automated meter reading system. Anyone else hearing about widespread AMR problems lately? This seems like it could be happening elsewhere too.
KUB meter reading scandal - thoughts?
Terry, I saw that story too. Portland General Electric had some AMR issues last year but nothing that widespread. The scary part is how long these systematic errors can go undetected. Makes you wonder how many other utilities have similar problems brewing but haven't caught them yet.
This is exactly why I always recommend clients do spot checks of their meter readings against their bills, even with AMR systems. Technology is great when it works, but these systematic failures can be devastating. KUB is looking at millions in refunds and their credibility is shot. Other utilities should take note and audit their AMR data more frequently.
