Church Tax Exemption Questions

Quick question about nonprofit tax exemptions. Have a large church in Georgia that's paying sales tax on their Georgia Power bills. They have proper 501c3 documentation but the utility keeps charging tax anyway. Anyone dealt with similar issues getting religious organizations properly classified?
Iris, this happens all the time. The church needs to submit their tax exempt certificate directly to Georgia Power's tax department, not just customer service. Usually takes 30-60 days to process but they should get retroactive credits.
Beatrice is spot on. Also make sure they're not operating any commercial activities that might disqualify portions of their usage. Things like daycare centers or bookstores can complicate the exemption.
Perfect, thanks! They do have a small preschool but it's clearly nonprofit. I'll have them submit the paperwork to the tax department directly.
