Caught an interesting error at a small manufacturing shop in Ohio. They have mostly single-phase equipment but AEP has been billing them on a three-phase rate schedule (GS-3) instead of the single-phase schedule (GS-1). The rate difference is costing them about $340/month. AEP installed three-phase service but they're barely using two of the phases. Anyone dealt with similar situations?
Three-phase billing on single-phase loads
George, this comes up occasionally with smaller manufacturers who requested three-phase service thinking they'd need it but ended up with mostly single-phase loads. AEP should be willing to switch them to GS-1 if their load is truly single-phase dominant. You'll need to show load data proving minimal usage on the unused phases.
Thanks Randy. The load data shows about 85% of their usage is on one phase, maybe 12% on the second phase, and less than 3% on the third phase. They have one small three-phase compressor but everything else is single-phase welding equipment and motors.
