What's everyone's threshold for taking on small commercial accounts? I've been getting inquiries from businesses with $800-1200 monthly bills, but wondering if it's worth the time investment. Most of my residential work pays better per hour.
Minimum monthly bill for small commercial audit?
I generally don't touch anything under $1,500/month unless it's part of a bigger portfolio. The research time is the same whether it's a $500 or $5,000 bill, so the economics don't work on the small stuff.
Agreed on the $1,500 threshold. Exception would be if you've got multiple locations for the same client - like a franchise owner with 5-6 small shops. Then the aggregate makes it worthwhile.
Good rule of thumb from Beth and Norm. I'd add that location matters too - small commercial in high-rate territories like ConEd can justify lower thresholds since the potential recoveries are bigger per kWh.
