Xcel Energy dispute turned into audit nightmare

Filed a simple demand billing dispute with Xcel Energy in Colorado - thought we had an easy win. Instead of just fixing the error, they launched a full account audit going back 6 years. Now they're claiming the client owes them $45K in other charges. This seems like retaliation for filing the dispute. Anyone seen this before?
Xcel did something similar to me in 2018. Filed a dispute for $3K in power factor penalties, they came back claiming $18K in back-billing for meter multiplier errors. Turned out they were right about the multiplier but it felt vindictive. Had to negotiate a settlement.
That's exactly what's happening here Sylvia! They found a CT ratio error that's been wrong for 3 years. Client definitely owes something but the timing feels suspicious. Going to push back on the full amount and see if we can settle.
Unfortunately this happens more than it should. Some utilities use dispute filings as triggers for account reviews. The good news is you usually have leverage to negotiate since they also made errors. Document everything and consider involving the PUC if the settlement talks stall.
Update: Settled for $22K instead of $45K. Not ideal but client is happy to avoid a lengthy PUC process. Lesson learned - always do a thorough account review before filing any disputes!
