I've been operating on a shoestring marketing budget - basically just my time and a $200/year website. What does a reasonable marketing budget look like for a solo utility auditor? I feel like I should be investing more but don't know the benchmarks.
Marketing Budget - What Should I Be Spending?
I spend about $6,000/year total on marketing: $1,200 on Mailchimp and email tools, $800 on networking group dues and event attendance, $400 on business cards and printed materials, $200 on my website hosting, and about $3,400 on meals and coffees for relationship building (lunches with prospects, coffee meetings with referral partners, etc.). That last category is the highest ROI by far.
My budget is closer to $3,000/year but I do more DIY. I design my own marketing materials, manage my own LinkedIn presence, and write my own content. My biggest line item is actually driving to in-person meetings and events. Gas, parking, and occasional hotel stays for conferences add up.
A good rule of thumb for professional services is 5-10% of gross revenue on marketing. When you're starting out, you might spend more as a percentage because you're building awareness from zero. The most important thing isn't the dollar amount - it's consistency. A $200/month budget spent every month beats a $5,000 splurge once a year. And Cliff is right that relationship-building meals are the best marketing spend in this business.
The 5-10% rule is helpful. I'll aim for about $400/month and split it between networking events and relationship meals. Thanks everyone.
