Software Tools for Audit Workflow

What software tools are essential for efficient audit workflow? I'm currently using Excel for everything but wondering if there are better options. Heard good things about some specialized utility billing software but not sure if the cost is justified for a solo practice.
Cecilia, Excel is still my go-to for most analysis work. I've tried a few specialized programs but the learning curve was steep and they didn't really save that much time. If you're comfortable with Excel formulas and pivot tables, you can handle 90% of what you need. PDF tools for extracting data from bills are probably more important than specialized billing software.
I use Acrobat Pro for extracting data from PDF bills - the table recognition feature works pretty well most of the time. Also invested in a good scanner with OCR software. For project management I just use a simple CRM system to track clients and deadlines. Keep it simple unless you're doing volume work.
For data visualization and client presentations, I've started using Tableau Public (it's free). Creates much more professional looking charts and graphs than Excel. Clients seem impressed with the dashboard views. Takes some time to learn but worth it for the visual impact.
Honestly, I think good templates and checklists are more important than fancy software. I've standardized my Excel workbooks with all the common rate schedules built in. Just plug in the usage data and most calculations are automatic. Spent a weekend setting it up initially but saves hours on every audit now.
