Let's talk about our own mistakes for a change. What calculation errors do you see auditors making repeatedly? I'm putting together training materials and want to focus on the most common pitfalls.
Common calculation errors that auditors make
Brenda, biggest one I see is CT ratio confusion. People forget to multiply by the ratio or they apply it to the wrong components. Also mixing up billing periods when rate schedules change mid-audit. And don't get me started on daylight saving time issues with interval data - that trips up a lot of people.
Nancy's CT ratio point is huge. I'd add: not accounting for power factor correction when calculating what demand charges should be, using wrong multipliers for demand ratchets, and assuming all months have the same number of days when converting daily rates. Also confusing real vs reactive power in calculations.
Jerome nailed another big one with power factor corrections. I see people miss tax calculation errors too - not realizing that utility taxes are calculated on different components of the bill. And always double-check your Excel formulas - I've caught calculation errors that would have cost thousands in wrong refund claims.
