Common audit workflow mistakes to avoid

Thought it would be helpful to compile some common workflow mistakes I see newer auditors make. Feel free to add your own observations. 1) Starting with detailed analysis before understanding the big picture 2) Not documenting utility contacts and conversations 3) Focusing only on errors, missing optimization opportunities
Good list Randy. I'd add: Not checking if the client has multiple accounts with the same utility that could qualify for different rate structures. Found a client paying residential rates on a commercial meter once - $2400/month overage!
Another big one: assuming the utility's tariff sheet is current. Always verify you're using the right effective dates. Duke Energy had some changes to their commercial demand charges that weren't reflected in the PDFs on their website for months.
Not building relationships with utility account reps is a huge mistake. A good relationship can get you information and cooperation that makes audits 10x easier. Bad relationships make everything harder.
Karl's absolutely right. Also - not setting clear expectations with clients upfront about timeline and what information you need from them. Nothing worse than being halfway through an audit and finding out critical data isn't available.
Here's a workflow mistake I made early on: not keeping detailed notes about WHY I made certain decisions during the audit. Six months later when writing the report, I couldn't remember my reasoning and had to re-analyze everything.
All excellent points. One more: rushing through the final verification step. I always do a complete re-check of my calculations and assumptions before finalizing. Found plenty of errors that would have been embarrassing to present to clients.
