Josh M. here from Lansing. Found a major CT ratio error on a new manufacturing client. Consumers Energy installed 200:1 CTs but the meter is programmed for 400:1 multiplier. Bills showing half the actual consumption for 8 months running about $12K monthly shortfall. Anyone dealt with CMP refusing to backbill the full period? They're claiming 6 month limit under Schedule GS-2 but I think this falls under meter error provisions.
CT Ratio Wrong on New Install - 200:1 vs 400:1
Pam L. in St. Louis had similar with Ameren. Check your tariff language on "meter equipment errors" vs standard billing adjustments. Usually meter hardware errors get full retroactive treatment. Document everything with photos of the CT nameplates and meter programming screens.
Randy Dawson here. Josh, this is definitely a meter equipment error not a billing adjustment. Most utilities have separate provisions for hardware failures vs administrative corrections. Pull the full tariff section on metering equipment and testing. Also request formal meter test from the utility - they have to provide calibration records. The 6-month limit typically applies to estimated bills and rate corrections, not physical meter problems. Fight this one hard with your commission if needed.
Greg S. from Omaha. OPPD tried the same 6-month game on a CT multiplier error. Took it to the Nebraska PSC and got full 14-month adjustment worth $38K. Key was proving it was equipment malfunction not billing error. Get the work orders from when they installed - bet they show 400:1 CTs were supposed to be installed.
Norma H. in Knoxville. TVA has 24-month lookback for meter equipment errors in their wholesale tariffs. Most retail utilities follow similar rules. Check if your state PUC has standard metering rules that override utility tariff limits.
Josh M. again. Got the work orders - supposed to be 400:1 CTs all along. Installer grabbed wrong ones from truck. CMP now agreeing to 12-month adjustment but still fighting the extra 2 months. Total recovery looking like $89K so far. Thanks for the advice everyone.
Lenny from Sacramento. SMUD pulled same stunt on me last year. Ended up getting 18 months back when we proved the error existed from day one of service. Sometimes you gotta threaten the PUC complaint to get their attention.
