Small church in Fayetteville has been on standard commercial rate Schedule GS-1 for years. Peak demand only 15kW. Noticed utility offers religious institution rate Schedule RI-1 with lower demand charges. Church treasurer asked me to look into it. Anyone familiar with religious institution rate qualifications? - Lois B.
Small Church Wrong Rate Schedule - Need Help
Lois B., most utilities offer preferential rates for religious and educational institutions. Key is proving non-profit status and primary use for worship/religious education. What utility are you dealing with? - Ed C.
Ed C., this is Entergy Arkansas. Church has 501c3 status and building is used for Sunday services, Wednesday evening programs, and community meetings. Seems like it should qualify for Schedule RI-1. - Lois B.
What's the rate difference? Worth pursuing? - Sandra O.
Sandra O., Schedule RI-1 demand charge is $8.50/kW versus $12.25/kW on commercial schedule. At 15kW demand that's $56 monthly savings plus lower energy rates. Church operates on tight budget so every dollar helps. - Lois B.
Had similar situation with church in Springfield MO. Utility required articles of incorporation, 501c3 letter, and affidavit stating primary use. Pretty straightforward process. - Walt B.
Walt B., thanks for the info. Will gather those documents and submit rate change request. Should have thought of this years ago. Church has probably overpaid thousands in unnecessary charges. - Lois B.
Don't forget to ask for retroactive billing adjustment when you submit the request. Some utilities will go back 12-24 months if rate was incorrectly applied. - Faye
