Carl O. from Topeka here. Quick question about Westar Energy's Medium General Service schedule. I see there's a monthly minimum charge but I'm not clear if this applies to the total bill or just specific components. Customer had very low usage last month due to a shutdown and I want to make sure I understand how the minimum gets calculated. Anyone familiar with current Westar tariffs?

Steve B. from Tulsa, OK here. I work with OG&E which has similar minimum charge structures. Usually the monthly minimum applies to the total of customer charges, demand charges, and energy charges combined, but not including taxes and riders. If the calculated bill falls below the minimum, you get charged the minimum amount instead. Check the definitions section of the tariff - it should specify exactly what components are included in the minimum calculation.
