Chugach Electric installed AMI meters at several of my Anchorage clients but they keep failing when temperatures drop below -20F. Display freezes and communication stops. Old mechanical meters worked fine in cold weather. Anyone else seeing cold weather smart meter failures?
Chugach Electric smart meters can't handle Alaska cold
We had similar problems with NorthWestern Energy smart meters in Rapid City. LCD displays crack in extreme cold. They've switched to different meter models with better temperature ratings.
MDU in Sioux Falls uses Itron meters rated to -40F. Haven't had any cold weather failures. Sounds like Chugach needs better meter specifications for Alaska conditions.
