I audit for two hotels in Sioux Falls that are direct competitors. Both are on Xcel Energy Schedule C-23. During one audit I discovered a rate classification error that could apply to the other client. Can I use this knowledge or do I need to keep it completely separate?
Confidentiality when working with competitors
You can't use specific information from one client for another, but you can use general knowledge about rate structures. I'd approach it as "let me review your rate classification" without mentioning the other client.
I have the same issue with two Norfolk restaurants both on Dominion Energy. I keep completely separate files and treat each audit independently. If I find similar issues, that's just good auditing practice.
The key is you can't disclose client-specific information, but rate schedules are public documents. You can use your expertise about rate structures without violating confidentiality.
