Working on a manufacturing client in Louisville. LG&E's 15-minute interval data shows demand spikes of 850kW at 3:17am every Tuesday for 8 months. Plant manager swears nothing runs at that time. Anyone seen this before?
Louisville Gas & Electric 15-min intervals showing phantom demand spikes
Seen it with Duke Energy in Charlotte. Turned out to be a faulty demand recorder. The spike was always exactly the same kW reading and always the same time. LG&E should replace the meter and adjust billing.
Had similar with PSE&G in Newark. Pattern was every Thursday at 2:33am for 6 months. Phantom 720kW spike. PSE&G credited back $4,200 in demand charges once we proved it was meter malfunction.
Check if those spikes correlate with automated meter reading cycles. APS in Phoenix had issues with interval recorders creating false peaks during AMR transmissions.
Document everything with photos of the interval data graphs. Most utilities will adjust billing for proven meter malfunctions, but you need clear evidence the spikes are physically impossible based on plant operations.
