Virginia Commonwealth University Health System has multiple buildings on Dominion Energy. Total demand around 12 MW. They're not enrolled in any demand response programs but have backup generators for critical areas. Anyone know Dominion's current DR rates and requirements?
VCU Health System demand response opportunity
Dominion's Schedule FDR pays $4.50/kW-month for firm load reduction capability. Minimum 500 kW commitment. You need 4-hour advance notice capability and generator testing requirements. Hospitals usually work well since they have robust backup power.
Make sure to check their generator permits first. Some air quality permits limit operating hours for testing. Don't want to promise curtailment capability you can't deliver.
Good point Tony. Checking with facilities now. They have 3 generators totaling 8 MW but air permit limits non-emergency use to 100 hours annually.
Demand response programs can provide significant revenue streams for large institutional customers with backup generation. The key is matching program requirements with operational capabilities and permit limitations.
That should still work for demand response. Most programs only call 10-15 events per year, 4 hours each max. You're looking at maybe 60 hours total.
