Client has 8 locations across Alaska. 4 with Chugach Electric, 2 with Golden Valley Electric, and 2 with Alaska Electric Light & Power. Each utility has completely different rate structures and billing formats. This is turning into a mess. Any advice on managing multi-utility portfolios?
Alaska multi-utility nightmare - 3 different utilities
I feel your pain. Had a similar situation in Florida with FPL, TECO, and Duke Energy. Create separate analysis templates for each utility but use consistent error categories across all three. The key is standardizing your reporting format.
Alaska utilities can be tricky because of the different fuel adjustment mechanisms. Make sure you understand each utility's fuel clause calculation. AELP in particular has some unusual seasonal adjustments.
Golden Valley Electric has that weird time-of-use structure for commercial accounts. Make sure you're checking the meter programming against the actual rate schedule. Found several TOU billing errors there last year.
Chugach is usually pretty accurate but watch out for power factor charges on accounts under 300 kW. They sometimes apply the charges incorrectly to smaller accounts.
Alaska Electric Light has been making a lot of billing errors lately due to their system upgrade. Double-check all calculated fields on bills from the last 18 months. Found about $15,000 in errors across 6 accounts last month.
