Version control for long-term audits

Working on a 4-year audit project. Bills keep coming in, rate schedules change, findings get revised. How do you manage version control? Chugach Electric in Alaska has had 3 rate changes during this audit.
I use filename conventions with dates and version numbers. "ClientName_Audit_v2.3_20211205.xlsx" tells me everything. Central Maine Power audit files get confusing without a system.
Keep a change log in each workbook. Document what changed and when. SDG&E in California questioned why my October findings differed from September preliminary report. Change log saved the day.
