Client gave me login to their utility account — do I still need an LOA?

New client in Des Moines gave me their MidAmerican Energy online login credentials so I can pull their bills myself. They said just use their login and don't bother with an LOA. Is this okay or should I still get a formal authorization?
Always get the LOA signed even if you have portal access. The LOA protects you legally — it documents that the client authorized you to access their account information. If the client later disputes your access or your fees, the signed LOA is your proof of authorization. Using someone else's login credentials without formal documentation could create liability issues. Also, most utility terms of service prohibit sharing login credentials with third parties. Get the LOA, then have the client add you as a separate authorized user through the proper channel.
Norm is absolutely right. Never rely on shared credentials as your authorization. The LOA is a legal document that establishes your right to access the information. Portal credentials are a convenience for data access, not a substitute for proper authorization. Get the LOA first, then use whatever access method is most efficient for collecting the actual data.
